THE CONSTITUTION OF 1956

1.      The Constituent Assembly passed the draft of the constitution on February 29, 1956.

2.      Governor-General Iskander Mirza gave his assent to the constitution on March 2, 1956.

3.      The first Constitution of Pakistan was enforced on March 23, 1956.

4.      There were 236 articles in the 1956 Constitution.

5.      There were 17 parts in the Constitution.

6.      There were 10 schedules.

7.      In the Constitution of 1956, the name of the country was adopted as Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

8.      Urdu and English were declared National Languages.

9.      A parliamentary form of government was introduced in the Constitution of 1956.

10.  Lists of subjects were enumerated as Federal List, Provincial List, and Concurrent List.

11.  The President was the Head of the State.

12.  The President was to be elected for 5 years.

13.  The Prime Minister was the Leader of the House and the head of the cabinet.

14.  The National Assembly consisted of 300 members equally divided among the two wings of the country.

15.  In constitutional organs, the direct election method was adopted.

16.  Iskander Mirza imposed martial law on October 7, 1958, and abrogated the constitution.

17.  Gen. Muhammad Ayub Khan was appointed as Chief Martial Law Administrator.

18.  On October 27, 1958, Gen. Ayub Khan took over as president.

19.  In the State vs. Dosso case, martial law was justified.

20.  West Pakistan was established as One Unit on October 14, 1955.

21.  The Constitution of 1956 had drawn its inspiration from the Westminster-style parliamentary government.
