Key Events of The Kashmir Conflict

1.       The Kashmir  conflict started on October 22, 1947.

2.       India and Pakistan occupy 99,381 km² and 101,338 km² of Kashmir, respectively.

3.       The Raja of Kashmir in 1947 was Hari Singh.

4.       The British government sold Kashmir to Gulab Singh in March 1846 for the sum of 7.5 million rupees.

5.       Pakistan and India have fought 2 wars over Kashmir.

6.       The UN Security Council considered the Kashmir problem in January 1948.

7.       The ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was signed in 1948.

8.       Pakistan and India agreed to respect the ceasefire as the Line of Control (LOC) in 1965.

10.   The Simla Agreement, which stated that the final settlement of Kashmir would be decided bilaterally in the future and that both sides would respect the LOC, was signed in 1972.  

11.   In 1989, Islamic militants began an uprising in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

12.   India and Pakistan fought after crossing the town of Kargil in 1999.

13.   On July 25, 2000, Hizbul Mujahideen, a Kashmiri militant group, declared a unilateral ceasefire for three months.

14.   President Musharraf and the Indian Prime Minister met in 2003.

15.   In 2001, the talks between President Musharraf and the Indian Prime Minister failed due to the Kashmir problem.

16.   Musharraf announced a ban on two Kashmiri militant groups on January 13, 2002.

17.   In 2003, India agreed to a Pakistani offer of a ceasefire after 14 years.

18.   India and Pakistan opened a trade route on the LOC in 2008.

19.   More than 80,000 Kashmiris have been killed in their freedom movement.

20.   Human rights workers found nearly 1,000 unmarked graves near the LOC in 2008.

22.   The new political map of Pakistan was unveiled on August 4, 2020. This map includes occupied Kashmir as disputed territory, reflecting Pakistan’s stance on the issue.
